Christmas scenes from Washington, D.C.

While the weather will not provide a “White Christmas” in Washington, D.C., the holiday displays here in the nation’s capital will certainly be a big focus for residents and tourists alike, as the U.S. Capitol and the White House remain the biggest draws at this time of year.

I started my holiday photography at the Capitol, where the 2016 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree comes from Idaho, harvested from the Payette National Forest.

Here was a picture I took looking away from the Capitol; you can see the setting sun peeking through the Capitol tree, with the Washington Monument visible in the background.

But, while the tree looks swell during the day, it is a much bigger attraction once darkness falls, as the lights come on.

Down the National Mall on the Ellipse – which is between the White House and the Washington Monument – the crowds are flocking to the National Christmas Tree.

One of colleagues in our Washington news bureau, Jackie Fell, got the chance to go down to the White House and snap a few pictures of the decorations inside:
