Hours after approving a plan to start a recount of the vote for President in Wisconsin, elections officials there set a price tag of $3.5 million for that recount – an amount that must be paid by the candidates asking for the election review, with a deadline of Tuesday at 4:30 pm Central Time.

The recount has been requested by Green Party nominee Jill Stein, as well as independent candidate Roque De La Fuente.

Under Wisconsin election law, because an automatic recount was not triggered, then Stein and/or De La Fuente will have to pay the cost of the vote count.

“For the recount to go forward, one or both of the candidates will have to pay $3,499,689 to the Commission by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday,” said Commission Administrator Michael Haas.

The commission noted in a news release that both candidates have been advised of the cost estimate.
